Growing Beans

This week we are exploring how plants grow by continuing our theme of Jack and The Beanstalk.

We are growing our own beans and learning the names of the different parts of the plant such as roots, stem, leaves and seed.

We imagined that we had magic beans and what they might grow into. We had lots of fabulous ideas including a Candy Floss Tree, A Chocolate Tree, A Panda Tree and A Rainbow and Fairy Tree.
|
We made our own bean packets and we will be bringing them home with some magic beans inside!

Here are some of the other activities the children have been up to so far this week...

Using our fine motor skills to make leaves for Jack's beanstalk

Making 3 letter words with the magnets

Observing what has happened to our tadpoles

Making jigsaws of different fairy tales and thinking about the characters in them

Using the outdoor writing area

Investigating what happens when we add water to the Orbies.  We pretended the Orbies were tadpoles and developed our fine motor skills using the leap frogs.

Children working as a team making an obstacle race

Reading the brochure to see how what steps we need to take to plant our beans

Making shakers with the beans

Buddy Time

We are beginning to think about moving to Reception next term and have met our Year 5 Buddies. They came to introduce themselves and read us stories. We will be meeting them lots more during the term and getting to know them really well so they can help us at lunchtimes and on the playground.

Just a quick reminder that on 4th May children in the Early Years are dressing as either sports stars or superheroes to raise money for Unicef. Donations would be much appreciated.

Also it is our visit from Ark Farm on Wednesday 3rd May. Please return your permission slips - many thanks.

Jack and the Beanstalk

This week we have been exploring growth and life cycles through our story Jack and the Beanstalk.

We have retold the story using puppets and thinking about what the different characters would say.

Our play house has been made into a Giant's castle. Watch out!

We've explored the beans in the tray, what sounds they make and how they look and feel.

We've pretended to grow our own flowers in the sand tray and in the play dough.

Mrs Ivory has made us a reading tent on the grass!

We have been watching the tadpoles growing.

We built the story in the right order using the blocks.

We used the leaves to make a beanstalk number line, guessing the missing numbers.

We made our own numbers using pompoms to print with.

We painted castles, mixing colours.

Making castle models.

We made our own Jack and the Beanstalk books

We listened to In the Hall of the Mountain King by Greig and imagined the music was the sound of Jack creeping through the castle when the Giant suddenly wakes up and chases him, and Jack finally chops down the beanstalk.

Next week we are continuing to learn about growth and life cycles as we plant our own beans. We are having some special visitors to school soon to help us learn more about our growth topic - please watch out for a letter coming soon with more details.
