Goldilocks..part II

In Nursery, we have been continuing our Goldilocks theme.


This week the children have been making porridge. They read the recipe using pictorial symbols, measured the ingredients and chose their topping. So yummy!!

Across the school we had a maths funfair theme. We measured how far our cars would travel when released down a slope, hooked numbered ducks and threw hoops over bottles, counting up our scores.

We had lots of fun.

We estimated how many bears there were hidden beneath pots of differing sizes. The bigger the pot, the more bears were hidden.

We have also counted bears, retold the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears in our role play area, made bear masks, thought about how the bears would have felt at different points of the story as well as lots more fun and games!

Next week we are thinking about people who love us in the run up to Valentine's Day.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

   If you go down to the woods today...

In our topic of Goldilocks and the Three Bears we have used bears as the impetus to count, add and use the language of comparison - small, smaller, smallest, large, larger, largest.

 

Filling pots of different sizes with porridge oats to make the bears their breakfast and to talk about small, medium and large.

We used large bricks with pictures from the story to retell Goldilocks and the Three bears using our own words.

 Since Goldilocks had eaten all the Bear's porridge, we thought they might like a teddy bear's picnic so we used our fine motor skills to make some jam sandwiches. They were very yummy!!

 

 

 We had a fabulous time exploring the messy play trays and used lots of great language to describe what we could feel - "gloopy", "squishy", "gooey", "messy", "slimy", "squidgy".

 We had fun outside making footprints in the paint and finding out what colours we could mix to make new colours.

 

We had lots of fun this week. Next week we will continue our learning through the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

 

 

The North Wind Doth Blow...

The North Wind Doth Blow, and we shall have snow, and what will poor robin do then, poor thing?

He'll sit in a barn and keep himself warm and hide his head under his wing, poor thing!



This week we have been continuing to think about the weather, especially the cold windy weather we have been experiencing this week.  


We have made streamers and kites to investigate what happens when the wind blows on them

 

  Making snowmen

We have been counting spots and matching them to dots on our ladybirds, making sure there is one spot to each dot.

 

 

We also split 6 gems between 3 plates to find out all the different ways we could separate them, remembering that there are still 6 each time and that the total does not change.

 

 We read the poem The North Wind Doth Blow and decided that the birds would be hungry while the weather is so cold, so we made some bird cakes and will put them in the trees later this week.

 

 

We read the book Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson.

We used our imaginations to make our own magic potions in our outdoor area.

We thought about what our magic potions would do. Here are some of the children's ideas:

"Make dinosaurs"    "Make me into a fairy"  "Turn you into a frog"

 

If you would like to help your child at home, you could try some of the phonic games that were sent home with your children or the maths games from the sheet you received. Remember to keep them short and only try when your child is in the mood.

Next week we will be focusing on traditional fairy tales starting with Goldilocks.

Winter Wonderland

This week we are focusing on the cold weather and winter.

We have been dressing teddy in the right clothes for the weather making sure he has his scarf, hat, gloves and welly boots.

We've been singing weather songs like Incy wincy Spider, I can sing a rainbow and I hear thunder.

We have been comparing and sorting weather and thinking about what the weather is like in different seasons.

 

We investigated which materials were best to make a coat that would keep Buzz Lightyear dry in the rain.

Here are some of the children's observations:

"It will make a good coat because it's plastic."

"The material has tiny holes in it so Buzz will get wet."

"The tinfoil has no holes and will work... the water just drips off!"

We had fun in P.E. learning how to balance on points (areas like elbows, knees, hands and feet) and patches (areas like backs and stomachs)

 

 

 

 

 

Next week we are reading the Julia Donaldson book "Room on the Broom". We will continue to think about types of weather including windy weather.

Your child will have bought home some counting activities you can try at home. When your child counts accurately and reliably 1:1, you can try adding 2 groups of objects together.
