Butterfly World Trip

A huge well done to all the children who came on the trip yesterday, and a big thank you to our parents and carers who came to help.

We explored a variety of different gardens and looked at what made them special.

We found a musical instrument garden and made some fast, slow, high and low sounds.

We met some stick insects, snails, ants and of course butterflies! We found out lots of new information, and the staff at Butterfly World were very impressed with what we already knew about caterpillars from our Very Hungry Caterpillar topic.

And of course one of the highlights of the day was having our packed lunches and making good use of the climbing equipment and slide!

There was lots of walking and lots of excitement - we are sure the children all slept soundly when they got home (we did)!

Down in the Jungle...

We have been jungle explorers over the past couple of weeks!

We read a book called “Who am I?”

I am furry, big and strong.

My teeth are sharp.

My tail is long…

Who am I?

 

How else could you describe a tiger?

Caterpillar class looked at a video about jungle animals and then sorted a group of animals in to hoops to show which ones live in the jungle and which ones don’t. Can you think of some jungle animals? Where does a polar bear live?

We turned our role play in to a travel agents, but our teachers noticed we didn’t play with it very much, so they suggested we changed it in to a jungle!

We came up with lots of ideas of what we would need in a jungle:

Lots of trees

Logs

Bark

Waterfall

Animals

Birds

Nests

Leaves

River

Mud

People

Twigs

Stick houses

 

How can we make a jungle?

Crocodile

Paint some trees

Put in a den

Elephant – grey

Green

Brown

Pink and blue butterflies

Real sticks with leaves stuck on

Tissue paper

We gathered lots of different green and brown paper and materials and we were very busy creating our own jungle! We found different coloured pieces of fabric to make grass, a waterfall and a river. Some of us created other things for our jungle, such as painted butterflies and paper plate snakes.

Now we can play in our jungle!

Which animal will you be? Why? How can you move like your favourite animal? What sound will it make?

We watched the Jungle Boogie to give us some ideas….

Then we listened really carefully to the beat in the music, clapping 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4. We really enjoyed dancing and playing instruments to the music.

Let's Investigate...

This week in the Foundation Stage we have become Investigators!

Some of us have been dressing up as Policemen and investigating mysteries. We have thought about the different technology that Police use, such as walkie-talkies and flashing lights.

We have had a workshop with real screwdrivers for the children to explore our broken machinery: a PC, a hairdryer, a monitor. How do these things work?

What can we investigate with the mirrors? We have been looking carefully at our own faces and features, talking about what makes us different and what makes us special. What is the same about you and your family? What is different?

In Literacy we have been thinking about the names of letters and the sounds they make. Butterflies have been looking carefully at capital letters and matching them with the lower case letters. Caterpillars have been learning to recognise the sounds s, a and t and thinking about the sounds these letters make. We have been watching this song.
